Hey! I’m Daree–

a multi-passionate, tech-savvy, unapologetically Black woman in a tech world.

And I break down complex material for everyday people.

Writing is both an art and a science. My career in content creation, content strategy, technical writing, UX writing/content design and copywriting helps define and debug software, app and web experiences for a variety of audiences.

I write for various industries, including digital, healthcare, wellness, tech and advertising.

I’m an advocate for content-first design, participate in planning for market research, and write pieces that fit your brand voice and tone.

As a creative, I also bring a well-rounded approach to dialogue and language as a part-time professional voice actor, speaker, podcaster, and 3x author of self-help books for teens and adults.

Scriptwriting about Drama in High School

My adult life has been about writing non-fiction subjects, but that’s not how I started.

I used to write and record songs with my little sister around age 8 or so. Then in high school, I’d cut pictures out of magazines-magazines that rarely showed girls who looked like me–and created stories about them. Each model was a character I wove into many creative stories.

In the 10th grade, I took spare Composition books and wrote new scenes whenever I had a study hall, which was often, and passed them around to my group of friends. They couldn’t wait for each new scene, which was like a soap opera.

At age 12, I started journaling, and eventually, in 2012, I published a book based on some of those journal entries, called “What’s Wrong With Me?” I won a few awards for it, like:

  • 2013 Stiletto Women in Business Award (SWIBA) Author of the Year Award
  • 2012 ForeWord Reviews Award finalist (Young Adult Nonfiction)
  • 2012 IndieReader Discovery Awards finalist (Young Adult Nonfiction)

All Grown Up, Writing in Corporate & Tech and Stuff

I grew up in Central New York State, and was recruited for my first job right after graduating college with my degree in Professional and Technical Communication. That job took me out of oblivion into the big cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. As I began my technical writing career there, I also earned a Masters degree, and started doing a lot of public speaking, which continues to this day.

In 2006, I started blogging and freelance writing on the side to release some of my creativity that was missing at work. I was a contributing writer for several magazines and blogs, like WOC Podcasters, VoiceoverXtra, The Dollar Stretcher, Hope for Women Magazine, and Clutch Mag, and many of that are no longer with us.

I also earned a slot in the 2010 Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition as one of the top 100 winners in the Magazine Feature Writing category, for an article about motherhood and depression called “When the Blues Don’t Move.” And I won some awards from the Society for Technical Communication (STC) Technical Publications competitions too.

These Days…

My writing passions revolve around personal development and customer experience. I care a LOT when things (especially products and customer support) don’t work like they should, and when people don’t realize their worth. I love to learn, and I’m always growing personally, professionally and spiritually. I don’t have a problem expressing my thoughts, or sharing the knowledge and wisdom I learn. My goal is to help people improve their lives, starting with words.

My AI Writing Policy

Sometimes clients want to know my stance on using AI in my writing. Here’s my policy.

I specialize in writing and refining original, impactful content. In fact, the name of my business—Ree Writes—reinforces that I am the only writer you’ll work with when we collaborate.

When working on a project, you can expect me to do the thinking, strategizing, and “wordsmithing.” But as AI has come into prominence, I would be remiss if I didn’t explore how to leverage this technology as a tool in my business to serve all of my clients more efficiently, while still staying true to my ethics and your content needs.

I may choose to use AI as a writer’s assistant in any of the following ways:

  • Transcribe interviews and notes.
  • Summarize articles, webpages, and videos.
  • Research topics and provide reputable sourcing materials.
  • Create or enhance an outline.
  • Uncover insights about the wants, needs, and purchase behaviors of a target audience.
  • Brainstorm lists of creative concepts or topics.
  • Offer alternative examples, scenarios, stories, and metaphors.
  • Review drafts and find information gaps.
  • Proofread for grammar, typos, or other errors.
  • Run A/B tests.

That being said, if you work with me and would prefer that I don’t use AI at all in our work together, I will happily honor that stance. Either way, I guarantee that using AI tools will not change my commitment to deliver original work based on my 25+ years of writing experience in the tech, healthcare, and marketing industries.
